I plan on attending an upcoming Danielson show. The tickets were cheap plus it is at this cool venue. Just thought I'd try it out. Any fans? What should I expect?

Have you heard any of his albums? Daniel Smith is a great songwriter, but his voice is not remotely radio-friendly. The live shows are supposed to be pretty lively; never been to one myself.

They'll almost certainly be playing a lot of songs from their album that just came out last month. I haven't heard it yet.

Oh, snap! I think they are in my relative area soon... like Saturday or something... and I forgot. Hrmmmm. Crap.

When Ships came out they seemed to be pretty popular in indie circles - or at least I think Pitchfork really supported them at that time. I liked Did I Step On Your Trumpet? (is that the title?), so I bought Ships. I'm not saying it sucks by any measure, but I've tried several times over the years to get into and I guess it's his vocals, or maybe just general songwriting that keeps me at a distance. With that in mind, I haven't even really looked into the new one other than watching the music video.

I'm a fan and saw them in Cincinnati a few weeks ago.

Ships is their magnum opus IMO, towering ever everything else in their catalog.  Bigideas is right, it did catapult them into a lot of success in the indie world, and Pitchfork did give it a 9.  Steve Albini also had them come play a festival he was curating.  But it now feels like it has been an eternity since 2006, and they kind of dropped off the map for a while until the new album.  BTW, the documentary film, Danielson: A Family Movie, is an excellent watch.  I saw it when I wasn't even a huge fan of the band it is definitely worth it.

Their live show is great despite not many of the family members still touring.  The new album is solid.  Lil Norge and Hosanna In The Forest are the big highlights for me.

Thanks for the heads-up. It was a great show as additional family members came to perform (8 people on stage). It was a fun show.

Yeah, I really don't understand why they let so much time pass, unless that movie really took a lot of their time and then they just had to have a break. They were big in 'indie' circles, but I wouldn't think they sold a lot of records or made a lot of money. I could be wrong.

If I had to guess about the long delay, I'd say it was because the musicians who converged for Ships all went their separate ways immediately afterwards, and Daniel Smith got busy with running his record label.

Anyway, I just acquired Best of Gloucester County last weekend and it is really good. It's a very different beast from Ships so I can't compare the two at all; if anything it's like the sophomore album Tell Another Joke at the Ol' Chopping Block but a million times better. It's also probably the radio-friendliest I've ever heard Danielson, which is really weirding me out.

They are so creative and artsy and I appreciate the dedication and hard work they put into their music.

However, I could never get past their first album "A Prayer For Every Hour". His voice just grates on me.

I do like this video though.

Apparently their first album is one of their harder-to-listen-to ones? I haven't heard it myself.

I do know that their most recent albums, Ships and Best of Gloucester County, are their most accessible (and in my opinion, best) material. That video you linked is a song from Ships.

what to expect...? ummm...some albums are hit and miss in my opinion but they really have some great songs out there.  if you can stand his voice you may dig it.
