I was at that Crush show with Fine China too.  Me and a buddy drove from Atlanta to Birmingham for that show because they weren’t playing Georgia on that tour.  We forgot the time difference between the two states, got there an hour early, hung out at Waffle House or Burger King waiting for the place to open, and ran into Jason Martin & Jeff Cloud who were there for the same reason.  I remember the truck depot or whatever it was got so cold that night that Cloud was playing bass while wearing those gloves where the part that covers the fingers can flip back, lots of people on stage were wearing their coats, and you could see the breath of anybody who sang.  That was my 4th or 5th time seeing SF59.

Ah, the Strand.  Still got boxes of VoGs and flyers from that place.  Yeah, I saw them every time they came through Atlanta, except for the first time when they opened for Plankeye at the Strand 'cause I couldn't get a ride.  Let's see....

SF59 with Morella's Forest, Joe Christmas, & Luxury at the Pterodactyl in 1995.
SF59 with Bloomsday at the Pterodactyl.
SF59 with The Calicoes & Pep Squad at some church in Atlanta circa Everybody Makes Mistakes.
SF59 with Paperback (David Bazan) at the Echo Lounge in support of Old with Swift on keyboards.
SF59 with Party People (?) at the Echo Lounge, the Never Play Covers gig.

It seems like I'm blanking on a couple more dates.  Did they play the Pterodactyl a third time, or some other place?

It was 1994 and I asked my friend Keith Hoerig (bassist for FIF) for new music suggestions. He mentioned them to me. So, I went to the Berean Bible Bookstore (now Berean Christian Stores) in Englewood, CO and found their Silver cassette on the shelf. I wore that tape out! Been listening non-stop ever since.

FuManchu
i was at that Strand show but i got there too late - i came from prom all dressed in Garb
The 1st time i actually got to see them was at the Pterodactyl right around when "Plugged" came out
I can't remember who they toured with though
The Tour they did with the Calicoes was at the Greenhouse (great venue)
and there was one more i saw at The Drunken Unicorn with Headphones
I never got to play with with them but i did get to play with Plankeye, Morella's Forrest, Joy Electric, Dennison Marrs, and The Calicoes - so i got pretty close
and recording with Jason is definitely one of my favorite accomplishments
i wonder if we ever met

pretty simple for me...my dad works at a Christian bookstore and one day, while browsing the cds, saw the "easy come, easy go" comp..bought it on a whim, and the rest is history  Grin

It was '96 or '97.  The band I was in was called Blue Collar Love, however I never heard SF59.  The bass player gave me Gold and Silver and I was floored. I was into My Bloody Valentine and Failure at the time, so it seemed to click for me.  Best band.  Even Starflyer at their worst is a hundred times better than 98% of crap on the radio.

I had a friend from junior high who was really into Nirvana. His uncle was a Christian guy and bought him "Speckled Bird" by The Choir and Starflyer 59's "Silver". Needless to say he gave me the albums since he didn't care for Christian rock. I didn't own a CD player at the time, so I copied Silver to cassette tape and I listened to it over and over again on my walkman.

I was at the Sonshine Music Festival in Wilmar Mn, 1994. They were just goin on, and as we were walking by we heard this screeching feedback, and were like, "we better check that out". Nobody had any idea who they were, but we instantly recognized that Gyro from Mortal was playing bass, so we stayed for the whole show. We bought everything they had to offer, (which wasn't much), although my buddy still has a very rare Starflyer 59 hat, that is red and yellow, and awesome.

16 years later, Im still trying to duplicate that feedback, to no avail. Huh

I guess that's the scary part. Here we are 16 or 17 years later and we're much older. I found them while single and have now introduced their music to my wife and children and of course friends too. I feel old.

Jason is still going strong too. Wow.

i found Starflyer at the christian bookstore near my home.  i'd heard about them. i knew people, who's musical taste i respected, that listened to them but i never had, except for the Holiday Song on Happy Christmas.  The album that was out at the time (1998) was the Fashion Focus but i couldn't take it. It was too dissonant for me.

A few months later i went with a girl i liked to go to Ann Arbor to get her books for her first semester at UofM.  she told me to pick something out to listen to, i saw she had Gold.  i put that in because i thought it was attractive she listened to music i couldn't stand. like i was missing something.  through the course of the 40+ mins it took to get from Detroit to Ann Arbor we listened to Gold and it grew on me in such a way that i went out and bought the Fashion Focus.  At that point i felt like i finally "got it".

Then i later got a job at the same christian bookstore so i could get discounts on back orders of Gold and Americana.  a few months later i picked up Everybody Makes Mistakes which at that point, solidified my love for Starflyer.

A few months later i moved to Virginia for a couple years and SF59 was playing a show a couple hours away from where i lived.  My mom drove me to the show like a trooper and i met Jason and talked to him for a bit.  He signed my t-shirt and that was it. I've been a hardcore fan ever since.

I moved back to Michigan in 2002, but just moved to Nashville in Feb of this year.

It was either the summer of '94 or '95 and my best friend came back from a church camp with Silver. He said I HAD to hear it. That first listening was magical.

We saw them within the next year at a Baptist church in Lancaster, TX with Bloomsday and Joy Electric.

Big fans ever since.
