This is a really sweet live video from way back. It doesnt hurt that this is one of my all time favorite early Starflyer songs.

The Feedback is epic!

Run your guitar through a Boss distortion pedal or Big Muff (which I think Jason was using at this point), crank it up, and push the strings down onto the pickups and you'll get similar feedback.  I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that for a lot of the Silver and Gold songs he would have a distortion pedal set way "too high", and he would press that pedal at the same time he was scratching the strings against the pickups.

As far as I know he would use a Fender Bassman Head and turn it up way too loud, in conjuction with the Green Sovtek (Russian) Big Muff with the Gain turned all the way up to the point that if he wasnt muting the strings by hand or playing something it would screech all the time, so long as the big muff was activated.

Ive also heard stories of a wah pedal plugged in backwards, or that he used the now discontinued Boss Superfeedbacker and distortion pedal (check ebay), or that he used a quarter directly on the pickups in conjunction with one or all of these. Sigh...

Ive tried all of these to no avail. I can get some pretty good feedback, but nothing that sounds like or is as controlled as what Jason used to get.

Ive also asked him before, and he always seems really vague about it, like he will say "Bassman head and some Pedals" and your left like "Oh its that
easy?"

Also, back then he was always tuned down to C or drop C, not drop D as some have thought.

Also again... A Whammy bar may be involved.

Either way someday Ill figure it out. When I do Ill sell the info to you. J/k Wink

Ive also learned that  back then, Jason used a Gibson Les Paul Recording Model, that had pickups that could switch between low and high impedance, which may have contributed to his signal reacting a certain way to whatever he would do with his strings. Also I have seen a handful of models of the Recording Model, that have a Bigsby Tremolo, which is also a possibility.

BTW if anyone has an old Recording Model laying around that they just cant stand the sight of, Ill gladly take it off your hands. Grin

That is the les paul recording model Martin is playing in the video. so that could be part of the answer. It seems like there was a thread about that particular guitar. He also used a fender Jazzmaster which when combined with a russian big muff gets some nasty feedback. My brother used to have an HM poster of martin playing a sunburst jazzmaster and a bassman head. That poster sold me on the jazzmaster.

feedback was one of the major things that sold me on SF59. much later, seeing jason vibrato full chords on a jazzmaster blew my mind nearly as much as the first time i heard the end of housewife love song. new poll idea?? - what's the best feedback moment in a starflyer song?

If it was "The Best Feedback Moment That Isn't Duel Overhead Cam," I would vote for the feedback after the first heavy part in "Indiana," 1:30... it's short but the build up makes it worth it.

yesss... Great moment! Love the wavy and creepy guitars to follow 1:30. haha

Oh how much I wish Jason would actually read this forum. I think he himself would start missing the feedback/screeches.
