i wanted to like that album SO much but couldn't get pass that awful out of tune guitar tone

Why does the guitar sound out of tune?

Because he plays a lot of the strings open, and those sound particularly naked when played with no production/overdrive/effects. That's how I can best describe it. It's not out-of-tune, it's naked. And I think that was exactly the desired effect.

It's pretty low quality when you compare it to The Brothers Martin album or most of the Joy Electric albums, except for the singing on My Grandfather The Cubist. It's a demo quality project with a synth bass. It's no wonder Ebel didn't want to put it out.

Actually I like Ronald of Orange better than Shepherd.
