I'm a purist in most things, so I usually play Blue Collar Love, the first song that was ever heard by most.

What about you?

Easy - "I Drive A Lot." Love everything about that song - great drum intro, catchy synth, upbeat, IMO Starflyer perfected.

Stop Wasting Your Whole Life/ Messed Up and Down from Gold.  I've done this for three folks (in the 90's anyway) and they all loved it.

I'll second I Drive A Lot, but if the person already has decent taste (and especially if they're already a fan of shoegaze) you can't go wrong with a pick off of Gold or Silver either.

I was in a CD sharing club, so for my turn I nominated Old for everyone to listen to.

Most of them thought the songs sounded too much alike.

In retrospect, I should have picked Talking Voice Vs. Singing Voice instead.

usually "Hazel Would" if it's a chick.  Gets 'em everytime.  Wink

for people that dig pop music, I play "Fell In Love At 22" or "I Drive A Lot" or "Can You Play Drums?"

For my arty, indie-snob friends, I play "Days of Lamech" or "Birthrite" or "Dual Overhead Cam"

Starflyer really had something for everyone, I'm convinced.  Unless you're a metal-head.  Anytime I jam SF59 for a metal head, they think it's boring.  Oh well.

My brother's a metalhead, and he thinks Starflyer is alright. I guess he's a bit more open-minded than your typical metalhead, though.

Well, I do admit. If I'm introducing a rock or metal fan to SF59, then I start with Americana.

I played "Blue Collar Love" for a metalhead and he said he liked it up until the verse started. Oh, well, I guess song dynamics are a little hard to grasp for your common metalhead. (I kid, I kid)

Also, people say sf59 songs sound too much the same all the time. I don't care that much what people think, but, when I hear such a complaint, I think they just didn't listen well enough, and therefore their opinion is even more worthless.

Anyway, I'd probably play people a few of the opening tracks from different periods.
"Blue Collar Love"
"I Drive a Lot"
"Underneath"
"Minor Keys"

I've converted many people to Starflyer 59...if they ever look them up on YouTube in their own time then they instantly find something like a poor live video :S and that puts them off for life. But I always hit em with a mix of my favs from their best songs: Dual Overhead Cam, Wake Up Early, Nice Guy, Underneath, Good Sons/List Goes On, Concentrate/Taxi, Kick The Can ect. GREAT SONGS!
