- Make a blog / website and post something on it at least once a year. More often would be great. - Some new music. Maybe a new CD and/or download of rarities, re-imaginings, covers, acoustic versions, etc. that would be available from said site. Or a new CD and/or download of all new material that would be available from said site. Even just some songs with Jason solo or with a couple of friends backing him will do. - Release the music recorded with Bazan. I don't care who does it or what it's called, I want to hear it.
- I hope 2012 is a great year for Jason and company. Hopefully he'll relax, take it easy a little while, but also realize he puts out some darn good tunes and he doesn't need T&N to put 'em out.

Quoth Jason Martin: My contract with Tooth and Nail is done right now, and at this point i'm not exactly sure what is the plan is. My original thought with Changing of the Guard is that it would be the last SF59 record, and it might still be. I do have a new batch of tunes I've been working on, so whether it will be a solo record, or a SF59 record, on Tooth and Nail, or some kind of self release is kind of up in the air right now. I just needed a break from the routine I had going on for the last 15 years of writing a record every year. I again have the itch to make some music, so hopefully in some form or another there will be a record to release in 2012. Emphasis mine. From this email.

I really wouldn't mind getting an instrumental EP in 2012. MAybe bring back Lenz and some of those strings again.

Honestly I'd love to see Jason experiment a bit with music... The last many albums from him have had the same basic song structure, writing, instruments, production. Why most love Silver/Gold/Americana is for the experimental composition of the instruments, vocals, song structure, production, etc, etc. Even Fashion Focus, although embracing pop-rock drums and more-simulated construction of songs, had a lot of new and experimentations. It'd be ideal for us to see Jason experiment with music and for us to fall in love with Starflyer 59 once again. Or maybe, a different project?

I just want a new album
i don't care if it's: him solo him acoustic a new SF59 record a new collaboration a new album by an old collaboration even a live album or instrumental album (though i hate both those ideas)
if i could write the future i would have him: release an album with David Bazan and release a new SF59 record (cause wouldn't a solo record be the exact same thing???)
that would tide me over for a little while

This is a Starflyer 59 fan forum...so why are there so many people who want him to just pack it in!? Retire? Seriously? WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU PEOPLE!?
Personally I agree that he needs to experiment a bit more, all his songs seem to be very similar in terms of style and structure these days. He needs some fresh blood. What made Talking Voice Vs. Singing Voice so great? Well the superb string arrangements for one. Why was Old so great? Well I imagine Richard Swifts contribution changed things a fair bit...he needs to get more input from other musicians me thinks.

I've been a hardcore SF59 fan since '95. I would say his effort in the last several years has been somewhat lackluster. I completely understand he has priorities that come before music, however it seems that SF59 and his recording have both become shelf items. If he wants to keep doing SF59 that's his business, and I'll still buy his material, however I think it would be unique to retire the name and start something fresh, perhaps with a band that could commit to touring - I really think SF59 has missed out (numerous times) on mainstream success and I think part of it is the lack of a consistant team on board.

I think retiring the name is a BAD idea. Even though SF59 is not that well known, it still has a little bit of history. Think of Bazan retiring the Pedro the Lion moniker. Right before that he was kind of getting noticed a bigger scale it seems. I remember Pitchfork* even reviewed his early Bazan works, but his last album didn't seem to get much recognition. Another instance is Blake Sennett and The Elected. I thought his album that he put out this year was quite good, but it didn't seem to get much attention either. I have a feeling if pretty much the same album was released under the Rilo Kiley name it would have done a little better (yes, I know Jenny didn't sing on it, but you're missing the point). Think of all the front men of popular bands who do their solo project under their name and it just kinda gets swept under the rug until the band and the name people know them for does something. The public is very fickle about things. It's hard enough to get them to pay attention to just about anything, but if you have a name, even one that is not necessarily 'big time,' I think it still helps some.
Somewhat related, I was thinking of the band The Gloria Record the other day. The lead singer, Chris Simpson, has his solo work that barely registers on the radar. I was thinking that if they had stayed together, or maybe even if he recorded under the name, that they may be a kinda big to semi-big name by now.
I guess there are instances, too, where the lead singer goes out on their own and still does big (someone like Phil Collins), but it seems to more largely favor a negative impact.
*Starflyer 59 got reviewed for a while, too, and I'm wondering if there just happened to be a staff member at the time with knowledge of the Christian music industry, and when they left the website pretty much stopped covering these bands.

He should release his next album under the name The Jason Martin Jazz Experience. *Starflyer 59 got reviewed for a while, too, and I'm wondering if there just happened to be a staff member at the time with knowledge of the Christian music industry, and when they left the website pretty much stopped covering these bands.
Really shoddy knowledge of the Christian music industry. P-fork's Sf59 reviews are THE reason I have no respect for the magazine's critical opinion.
