Dial M is by far my favorite post-Old Starflyer album.  I have seen some threads popping up lately about albums like My Island being very underrated, and I have to say that for me Dial M towers over all of the newer albums (again, by newer I'm saying the albums since Old).

It's hard to say exactly why I enjoy it more than the rest, sonically it is not drastically different than some of the others, but to me it feels like a much more cohesive album effort.  As with the rest of the modern albums, I think there's a fair amount of filler material (notably Concentrate and Automatic), but I think overall there are a number of gems ... Minor Keys is one of those classic SF59 openers that I think is one of the strongest on the album, similar to I Drive a Lot and Play the C Chord (+ bonus points for the Johnny Marr reference).  I think The Brightest of the Head is one of the more under-appreciated SF songs.  M23 has some of the strongest lyrics of any SF song I can recall at the moment.  And Little Bird would also have to rank amongst my favorite closers.

I still think this album is a considerable step down from just about every album up to Old, but I feel like it's a very good album, especially by the modern standards.  It does get docked by me for the filler, but I think the high points are pretty great, and I think lyrically the album is fairly strong.

Anyone share these types of general thoughts?

I just can't imagine how "Concentrate" ranks as filler for you. Well, different strokes and all that jazz. It's maybe my favorite sf59 album overall.

I find the simple chorus lazy and uninspired, and 75% of the song is basically just the chorus repeated.

Obviously this is Jason's favorite album since he hasn't felt the need to update sf59.com with any of his other albums since.

Concentrate is total filler. M23 is my favorite SF59 song of all time.
