What kind of turntable should you buy?  What is on the market?  Something simple to use at home.  Any suggestions on where to buy one?

Go to Ebay.  I bought a new Gemini XL-120 for $65 last year.  It's a manual belt driven turn table.  You also need to buy a preamp for it for $35.  I got mine from Radio Shack.

I suggest ebay as well. I got a Sony turntable (can't remember the specs now) for $15 and a preamp from Circuit City for around $35 and everything sounds great. I also have an Ion USB turntable that is very cool but I haven't spent much time on recording with it.

With my set up currently the disadvantage is I have to have the computer turned on and recording to listen to records. There may be a way around that, but like I said I haven't had time to mess around with it much. There are audio cables for normal use but I don't have a receiver in the room the USB turntable is in.

^ I am drooling at those. If they sound as beautiful as they look, those must be impressive indeed.

Beyond good brands, what exactly should I look for in a turntable?

Does the alignment of the cartridge depend more upon the type/brand of cartridge or the arm to which it is attached? I thought all styli were in cartridges...?

Is there such a thing as a record player with a tape player that you can use to convert?   One that has a connection to a computer? I am sure there is but I don't know what to look for. I have a program that will convert them but I don't have a player that is new enough to have a computer type of hook up.....

There are turntables with USB cables.  Not sure how good they are.  I think you can still go to an electronics store and buy a complete stereo that has a turntable, tape deck and am/fm radio.  You can also buy a turntable and a set of RCA cables with an 1/8" headphone jack at one end and plug that into your laptop/desktop and record that way.

I run mine through my stereo and then into the computer and have had no problems.  It's basically a line out to a line in.  You don't have to spend a ton of money to do all this.  My turntable was $65 and my pre-amp (from Radio Shack) was $35.  I run mine through my Phillips surround sound receiver/amp using the TV inputs.

Wow thanks for the help and ideas.  The problem with my record/tape player is that it is so old it doesn't have any kind of outputs so I was looking for something new to get......someday!!!
