Alright, I just got me a used turntable for $30. When I got home, I saw its needle was broken and needs to be replaced. The cartridge is an audio-technica AT13Ea, and from my cursory google search it seems this is an old model cartridge that isn't being made any more. So I think I might be better off just getting a new cartridge.
I was wondering if y'all have any recommendations?

I ordered a replacement needle and cartridge from http://www.turntableneedles.com/. I found their navigation system extremely helpful for finding the right fit. One recommendation I have is to look for an elliptical needle if you can. They are supposed to make better contact with the grooves, which both sounds better and causes less wear on the record. Unfortunately, when I bought my replacement, I accidentally forgot to specify "elliptical" so I've been stuck with a spherical needle since then.

Okay, I found an article on setting up the cartridge, and it's scary. How much of that is necessary and how much of that is just being obsessive?

Well, I'm honestly skeptical with the domain name being audiophilia, to start off with. I honestly can't say how much of that is real-life necessary... I skimmed the article, and I'm not able to tamper with or tweak my turntable, it being an automatic linear tracker.
I think something important to realize is the difference between theoretical advantages/improvements and practical advantages. I'm pretty sure a lot of the things audiophiles do to get optimal sound out of turntables or sound systems in general actually do improve the sound somehow... but I also believe these improvements are so minimal and marginal as not to be noticable to anybody, not even the audiophiles themselves--it's in the mind. If one wants to hear an improvement, it will be heard.
I hope that helps you somewhat.
It is important to get the tracking weight right on a turntable, and the antiskate. I cannot remember why, exactly, but it's a definite practical thing related to physics which I believe is supposed to have a quite noticable impact on the sound reproduction.

Update! I ended up buying the Grado Prestige Green cartridge, and it just came in the mail today. I spent a bit over an hour hooking everything up and getting the cartridge properly aligned.
Everything's working great and I'm a happy camper.
