Something's wrong with my transmission. It's still drivable for now. I'm taking it by a garage pretty soon; I would really appreciate it if y'all could pray that it's something that won't require me to pay $4000 for a new transmission.

Tell me more.  I work in the industry.  Tell you year, make, model and what it's doing.  You don't have to buy a new transmission either.  You can get a used on with a warranty for a fraction of the price.

It's a '92 (or maybe '93) Mazda 929. The engine's making a bit of a whining sound, and it's idling rough.

The doesn't sound like a transmission to me.  Rough idle can be anything from worn out spark plugs/spark plug wires an oxygen sensor being bad or even a mass air flow sensor being bad.  When did you get your last tune-up?

When you hear the whining sound are you driving?  Does it make the sound at idle or only at higher RPM's?

Last tune-up was in April when I bought it. I think the whining is more noticeable at higher RPM's.

I already took the car to one garage. They looked at it and said it was the transmission. They recommended another garage for the fix because they prefer not to do that sort of internal work.

If you put it in neutral or park (I'm assuming it's an auto) and push the gas, does the whine get worse?  Have you ever had the transmission serviced?  How many miles are on the car?

Yes.

I haven't, I don't remember if the previous owner did or not.

Update: The transmission gave out completely while I was at work. I ordered a remanufactured transmission (for a bit over $1900), comes with a 3-year warranty. The mechanics will be installing this week or next. People at work have been nice enough to drive me to and from work until the car's running again.

I'm thankful. This could have gone a LOT worse.

Glad to hear it's working out. Quite a chunk of change there, but I'm glad it's running again.

It's actually worked out okay. I got $3,000 for the dent, which is more than I paid for the car, and I got to keep the car.
