It can get nasty on there. Although, it's gotten better over the years. The cussing and flame-wars have died down quite a bit.
See that's totally bogus. The thing I've noticed about messages boards is that people viciously attack one another with total anonymity. I wish we could all just be more civil. I've had run-ins on message boards over the years, but while my posts seem to get people riled up I don't purposely wish to attack them. Although there are times when I've considered it, but I've had to take a step back and just remember this is only words on a screen.
Well, I remember it used to be worse like 6 years ago. True, no message board is wonderful, but I'm apart of a lot of quiet, nice communities with little flaming. The My bloody valentine forum is a great example. There is a little flaming...well really 1 person attacking another person, but for the most part, a nice welcoming community. I've been a member for like 4 years. Granted, I hardly post there anymore, but it's not completely bogus to say that communities aren't always full of hatred and spite, but I do think the Velvet Blue boards are is a place where indie kids can get together and see who's more indie, to tell you the truth.
