Oh yeah! I always thought they had a clever name. I noticed they have a single on 1.44" diskette up right now...it's either a really short song, or they had to apply some insane compression on it. Not even a nicely decorated diskette, sheesh! Still pretty cool, though.
(On that note, I heard of one band that put out a single fairly recently on Minidisc only. I thought that was really cool, because I've always been a Minidisc geek.)
Anyway, yeah, they have great music.

Yeah, I think that kind of thing is very cool. Fresh and different. The Foxglove Hunt diskette looks fantastic, but those things seem to destroy themselves so easily Ah, okay. I forgot about that.

I remember some years ago I had a friend who predicted that mini discs would replace CDs. Of course that never happened and blank CDs became more affordable. I was watching TV and someone said that she didn't think people would be watching DVDs in 20 years. I don't have any clue what people will be doing in 20 years, but I'm pretty sure DVDs will last that long. As long as you don't scrach them up.

But the movie industry wants us to replace our DVDs with Blu-Rays! (Though I am thankful that the format war seems to be nearing an end.)
And some people are predicting that faster broadband internet means that we'll eventually just download all our movies. Considering some of us still listen to vinyl, I somehow doubt that physical copies of movies will ever go completely extinct.

Vinyl and physical movies are quite different. If you can download a movie and watch it anywhere on any tv there would be no need to for physical movies. Plus the digital movies will probably look better and sound better than a video tape or dvd. Vinyl on the other hand sounds better than cds and mp3s. It still has an advantage over its replacements. I do think that the downloadable movie really will be commonplace in the not too far off future.

It's over. Toshiba gave up this week. Yay for not having to buy expensive dual-format players, I guess, but I'll wait until you can't buy DVDs any more and they're as cheap as DVD players are now. I don't think that's going to happen any time soon. DVD is a good format. I do prefer having movies on my laptop's hard drive if possible; it's a lot more convenient than having to pull out the DVD drive.

I think the straw that broke the camel's back was Wal-Mart's decision not to carry the HDDVD players. I like having movies on DVDs because they are quite portable and because I think 4 GB per movie is a lot of space to take up on the hard drive. If I were to store tons of movies on my computer I would keep them in divx format to conserve space. On a side note, I am officially in love with firewire. I would like to get a external hard drive that uses firewire because the USB ones are way too slow.

I think a DVD if properly cared for could last 50 years. But I guess we'll find out for sure in 50 years. I think broadband would have to get a lot faster to have movies available everywhere. What is slowing down this whole process is that there is money to be made in delaying technology. It is currently possible to stream TV on the Internet, but most stations won't do it because they like the old school advertising model better.

I saw a DVD for the first time in 1999. That's not too long ago.

I don't think everyone is immediately going to switch to Blu-Ray. First of all, not everyone has a high definition TV and secondly not everyone can afford $20 for a DVD. The bigger switch going on in technology will be the end of analog TV and the transition to digital television. I'm still waiting for my converter box.
