how will the cd be distributed?  i assume there will be downloads available, but what else?  will there be cd's sold to the artists to re-sell?

i know this whole thing is technically illegal, but the music has to be distributed somehow.

No CDs, unfortunately.

However, I have taken great pains to make the tracks sound good together, and not just a random collection of songs, so, burning CD-Rs is totally an option.

I think word-of-mouth is the way to go on this one.

Well there are those online services that let you upload the files and artwork to sell the album online. And they'll burn, print, package and ship the product.
But I don't see why anyone would want to pay that online service for all the materials plus labor and shipping when the whole album will be available to download here for free.

Especially when we will have FLACs available.

is it something that you just use one of those "muxtapes" type places for people to get the record?

has the artwork been created & assembled for download tomorrow as well?

will there be a thread for reviews from those who contributed? for those who didn't?

given the "legal" ramifications, is a copy going to end up in martin's hands?

personally, i am really jazzed to hear this thing (jono has done decent enough talking it up 'round here). i feel like this might end up being a great way to create a sense of community between the artists on the compilation. i know that i am looking forward to following links & addresses to heap praise on the covers i fall for. plus, i am interested in hearing the directions of the groups that i have heard previously (husband & wife, one wolf), as well as the tracks that i have thought about covering ("just try", "help me when you're gone").

No. There will be a page (hosted here at sf59fans.com) with all the infomation and direct download links to a dedicated host.
Much more professional and at better quality.

The album cover has been created. I'm not sure if anyone would want a back cover or something more for a jewel case, but I can come up with something if a few people request it.

Sure.

We sure hope so! Grin

No selling. We don't want to make T&N or EMI mad. People will need to get it online, or if someone has no internet connection, they'll need to bum a CD-R off someone. Smiley

He'll probably just download it like everybody else.

I still don't see why you and Jono think it would make T&N or EMI mad. They're just covers by fans of a band.
People do covers all the time, is there a line for "too many covers" somewhere there?  I don't see it. Undecided

But selling would be pretty pointless anyway. Unless the amount is all just completely for the online service and shipping.

I don't know either, but the response I got from the T&N rep was not very nice, and he did not clarify. My take: As long as Jason's OK with it, it's OK. We're not selling it, so neither EMI nor T&N are getting cheated of money.

gimme a break! If anything, this CD will generate more interest in SF59 which means more revenue for T&N!

Jason should make his own record label (he's already doing recording, mixing ad mastering for others) and just have T&N or another label take care of the distributing part.
