My local Christian book store had a "used demo rack" where you could buy tapes that had been opened for demo purposes for cheap.  At the time I was loving Joy Electric's "Five Stars for Failure" (which was a recent album at the time) and I saw that the "She's The Queen" tape had a Joy Electric version of a song (Blue Collar Love) on it.  I took it to mean that this Starflyer guy tried to make a song in the style of JE and was VERY impressed (not knowing that Ronnie and Jason were brothers!) at how well he'd nailed it!  I kept listening to "She's The Queen" and soon after, got "Silver" from the same crappy used demo bin... it took me a while to like "Silver" but once I did, it was something entirely new and engaging.  Been a fan ever since (and bought all the albums new!)

I had heard Starflyer songs for some time on various T&N comps since '94.  I kind of liked it but wasn't totally into it yet.  I think I bought a She's the Queen tape b/c it was kind of cheap and didn't give it much play time.  Then I bought the Fell In Love EP b/c it was cheap and I thought I should give them another shot.  It got moderate play time.  Then my roommate bought Fashion Focus and I really started digging them.  I think Shut Your Mouth finally hooked me.  Then Too Much Fun and Traffic Jam got me interested in the wall of sound/endless drone sound.  I went back through all the old comps I had and started really appreciating Blue Color Love and Duel Overhead Cam.  I was smart enough to get the Old Demos when they offered them and hit up eBay for the rest of the previously released rare stuff.

Short version: had heard of them for about 3-4 years, finally gave them a shot thanks to roommate's Fashion Focus.

I heard Hazel Would on a 7 Ball sampler and immediately fell in love. The rest consisted of a 13 year old at a Christian Bookstore begging them to order it.

In April of 1994 I bought Silver after falling in love with T&N's first 2 albums by Wish for Eden and Focused. I had been sheltered from "secular" music (besides what had been played on the radio) I was blown away and it changed my musical tastes for life. It was/is an important day for me  Wink

And no, I don't know Keith anymore. I haven't seen him or talked to him in about 10 years.

Lucky you!  Grin

I bought Americana because the Prayer Chain guys played on it.
