In light of the server problem that knocked the forum out on Saturday, I've been takling with Stephen and Decade Child via email about a possible solution. Decade Child offered to host this forum on the server where he runs his website: http://g2inc.net . He's also said he's interested in merging this forum with the one he's running. In his words: SF59 forum is active, but needs a good host. My forum is nearly dead, and can host a million SF59 forums. Fuse? I've been taking my forum at g2inc.net into the music direction, so, why not make it a general music forum with a big SF59 board? As it currently stands the idea is to make Sf59 Fans a subforum of the g2inc board. (With Joy Electric, Bon Voyage, etc all going into a sub-sub-forum.) This subforum would have a distinct theme (different header picture and color scheme) from the rest of g2inc. If you're familiar with the Velvet Blue Music forum, and how it's a distinct subforum of the Vagrant Cafe forum, that's basically what we would be doing. I believe we'll be able to copy all the content from this board (all the threads and member data), so we won't have to re-register or lose anyone's post counts. Non-Starflyer-related discussions would be moved to the appropriate subforum elsewhere on g2inc. So, what do y'all think? EDIT: Whatever happens, we will definitely be keeping the sf59fans.com domain name, if only to make it redirect to the new url.

What would happen to the SF59 Wiki? I kind of like that.
I've always hated how the VBM boards are just a sub-board of another site. Seems weird for a label to do that.

I think we could move the wiki as well.

1. This is the first major hiccup we've had. Not sure why we're talking about jumping ship already. 2. Like grandeped is saying, I like the fact we may be the only full-time sf59 fan forum. I'm not super-keen on being a subset of another forum.
2 is my main concern. 1 should definitely happen if we want. 2 could happen, I feel, if we could still have the illusion the forum is its own separate being. (domain points there, etc.)
I'm... having trouble focusing my mind right now so that's all I'll say right now.

Look guys (and one or two gals):
I'll host the whole shebang for free at our servers. Forum, wiki, etc. etc. The board would remain its own website, with the wiki and all. As time allows, we could even make future improvements.
So, how 'bout it? No jumping ships, just jumping to a good webhost.

No offense, but I'm really not keen about merging the forum into another one. It's been running swimmingly so far, and I would prefer it remain an exclusively SF59 forum, like Jono said. I guess we could honestly just do nothing, but it concerns me that these databases just suddenly went corrupt. I mean, yes, CTSquare could probably fix it like I did, but it bothers me that they went bad at all. I was also disappointed in the response time. Yes, we should probably be more diligent about backups; I haven't backed up the forum in a while (I don't know if you are, Chris?), but I shouldn't have to worry about whether the forum will be up tomorrow. 'Set and forget' is what I like.

Eh. I know where you guys are coming from. It really isn't about my forum, I just think that this place can get a nice expansion of more different music and other message board discussions. Like I've told Meta and Stephen, we can go as far as making a brand new music forum, named whatever we want. We don't necessarily need to keep my g2 forum, only combine the two into one, the details are up for debate.
In no way is this proposal meant to take a good community like this and shove it into a single board. A better question is if you would rather have this forum be as it is now, or for it to expand into music outside of just SF59. SF59 is still the community favorite, but we would just have other discussions on music and other discussions. (and games, even)
I am open to any suggestions.

Maybe that is where I am confused - I thought we already had discussion on other music outside of SF59 here?
I also don't think this was the first major hiccup. I seem to remember others. I think I also remember thinking... "hmmm... they should get different hosting" before.

To be honest with you, I probably don't care either way, as long as the people running the site get a hosting solution they are happy with. I recently switched some sites from godaddy.com to bluehost.com and I am now so happy with what I have now. Just avoid GoDaddy if you want to do any DIY web site programming.

Do you have a valid email address? I don't think our emails or private messages are getting to you.

It's been decided. We're moving the forum to The Ordinary's server. I'll give a heads-up before the transition; there will likely be a few hours of downtime.
Stephen still has admin privileges on this board, but he's too busy with other stuff (like learning Japanese) to visit the board much, let alone full-time administration. That was the reason I was promoted to admin: to fill his place.

Speaking of admins - someone needs to go clean up the wiki - major spamming going on there... again

And you're doing an awesome job. Thanks for taking this forum and running with it, Meta. I salute you.
