Here's the Starflyer quote from the article: "But it wasn’t until the formation of Tooth & Nail Records in 1993 that these artists began building real credibility. Instead of being the exception, like Stryper in the ‘80s, they started to become the norm. Backing a versatile and talented roster that included bands like the enigmatic Danielson and shoe-gazing Starflyer 59, Tooth & Nail slowly built a strong fan base in their Seattle hometown. And then they hit gold with Magnified Plaid."

Well, it was a very short article and you can't get into too much detail in terms of Ebel being a pastor's kid from Oregon moving to California to start the label and relocating to Seattle. In a lot of ways Brandon Ebel is seen as a key player in the formation of the scene when he was just smart enough to get a business model together and snatch up any cool Chrindie bands out there. The sad thing is that Tooth and Nail has made a lot of money off of other's people's art and in my opinion, I believe record sales are more important to them than good music.

If that was totally true, they probably would have dropped SF59 a long time ago.

If that was totally true, they probably would have dropped SF59 a long time ago. Ebel has had a soft spot for Starflyer and Joy Electric. However, the rest of the original bands are gone (MxPx came back). It's a fact that if you don't sell on the label you get dropped. Ebel is kind to Starflyer I believe in part because he is the band's A&R guy. Starflyer probably doesn't get a ton of push because historically the band is not a big seller (I think we discussed the scans in another thread). Part of that also has to do with the lack of touring. The other I would say is that bands don't make any money till they recoup recording costs.

I see as many ads now for them as I did back when they came out.

Well, when the band started it was Ebel that signed the group and he was the A&R guy for a number of years. I am unaware of when that changed.

Nope - still seeing about 2-3 per album. Which is about the same I see for any other T&N release, except for the really big releases.
