I got Jason's reply!
Who came up with all of the awesome drum intros - you or the particular drummer for that album?
1. Dont really remember, probably a combo of both. I always liked it when bands had a simple signature drum part in a song, so we would always try to have something like that as often as we can.
Are you involved in your worship team at church? Acoustic or electric?
2. I do live sound for on sunday mornings at my church about once a month or so.
Any news about when the next album is due out? How is it different from Dial M or My Island? Are you going to do a pre-album EP? Is the lineup changing? Any special treats like "Ghosts of the Future" in the works for this album?
3. Just about done tracking the record now...it will be more acoustic guitar based than previous releases. It is tentatively called " The Changing Of The Guard" and should be out in the summer or early fall.
Would you kindly considering doing a t-shirt/album package when the new album is available to pre-order, like with My Island and Dial M?
4. That is something the label usually does, I just make em , and they sell em.
Do you think you and Ronnie will do a Brothers Martin follow-up CD or was The Brothers Martin a one-time thing?
5. Looks like that was a one time thing, but if the label wanted us to do another I would be into it for sure.
If you could re-record any of your albums which would it be?
6. If I could I would like to remix leave here a stranger, there is a possibility of that happening as well if we can track down the 2 inch reels.
Is there any story behind the "city" theme of the Fashion Focus album cover?
7. That was just one of a few cover ideas that was sent to us, and I really thought those images went well with the title.
What is the record pictured in the "Old" CD booklet?
8. I have no idea, most of those shots were of us recording and whatever was laying around was in the photos.
Do you ever read what critics write about your albums or do you ever check this message board?
9. Sometimes...I pretty much am very aware of my limitations, so if it is something they say could be better, a lot of times i feel the same way as the guy giving the review...if they say something silly like im trying to be like radiohead, or my christianity is a reason the record is bad I will usually dismiss it as a bad review. Obviously good ones are better to read than the bad ones:)
You said previously you want to release 20 LPs then quit. If Tooth & Nail were to close doors tomorrow, what would you do next musically? Would you continue SF with VBM? Self release records? Go solo on Capitol Records? or just quit early?
10. 20 records is a lot...every time i finish making a record there is so much time involved I will think this will be my last...hard to say how long things will go on.
Would there be any possibility of allowing fans access to individual tracks of some of your prior work so we could do some SF59 remixes? Similar to what Daniel Brigham did on Ghost of the Future.
11. I would really have to know some one to give em the files from a song...kinda like a diary, dont want everyone to know too much how things are done. I miss the old days when band people kept to themselves a little bit. With all of the podcasts / tweets / its just a bit much. Does anyone really care if I went to a movie last night and ate some tacos? All that to say I dont think i would be into sending off my pro tool files to whoever wanted to open em.
What was your favorite/least favorite thing about being out on the road?
12. When i was young it was fun, because I had nothing going on at home. When you get older you're leaving a wife and kids, a job, etc...so the stress of being gone and life getting a bit more complicated took away the desire to always be out on the road.
Do you use PODS or other amp simulators when you record?
13. All the time, i would say its about 90 / 10 . I am a fan of whatever sounds best when recording, so to limit myself for the sake of being "pure" in the recording process to me is just silly.
What sample rate and bit resolution do you run in Pro Tools when you record your albums?
14. 44.1.
On Gold when you recorded the drums by yourself, did you track the drums first or the guitar first. I was always curious how you did this on some of the songs that seem to have a tempo change or just staying in time with the wall of guitars.
15. Tracked the drums first with no click track, I used to practice that way for that record so most of the slowdowns were intentional.
Have the Beatles been an influence for any of your work or decisions?
16. For sure, no one can make a record without there being a bit of that in there at some point, but i am not a crazy beatles guy or anything. I dont think every song on every album is the best thing ever, but when they are good there is no one better
Is there one piece of equipment (guitar, effects, pro audio, etc..) that you've always wanted but haven't been able to obtain?
17. That changes from album to album, I would say for the most part I have been able to always get what i wanted gear wise in some way or another.
On two occasions you were close to signing to two different major labels - Rondor and Atlantic Records. Do you have any ideas (or even guesses) about the refusal of the record companies? Did you feel frustrated about that?
18. I stopped thinking like that a while ago, stuff like that can drive you crazy. I could blame it on bad luck, lack of talent. etc..As a christian I have to say God didn't have those things happen for reasons I dont know, and whatever small success we have had i should count as a blessing.
If you don't mind talking about smoking, how did you get started on that? Have you tried to quit? I don't mean to be judgmental, just curious.
19. Really typical, thought it looked cool...Now my voice has dropped two octaves and I cant go upstairs without running out of breath, not really a great upside. I think about quitting, but to be honest I have never tried.
What are some of your favorite albums (or new artists) to come out in the last five years?
20. I listen to way more old music than new music these days, so I wouldn't really know what's happening too much...I do like some Lady Gaga songs.
What's your favorite Boo Radleys song?
21. Finest Kiss without a doubt. Thanks for the interview.
