The art's the same but the attention to detail - beauty of the marbled vinyl, jacket design with it opening up - and that Burnt Toast does this at all just shows that they, in my opinion, are bigger fans of Starflyer than T&N is. It seems like a Starflyer release is almost an afterthought to T&N but to Burnt Toast Vinyl they make it an event. I was excited to get the CD, more excited to get the vinyl.
To be fair, though, I think you're simply highlighting the distinctive art advantages an LP release has. Of course, any colored vinyl is neater than a plan ol' CD, and an LP's gatefold packaging is going to feel more "epic" (for lack of a better word) than the same thing scaled down to a mere double-panel CD insert. Put simply, an LP release will probably almost always feel unique while jewel-boxed CDs (I assume this was a jewel-box release) tend to feel more generic (this is probably why lots of groups do digipak things nowadays... they have a more unique, LP-like feel to them). I don't think it's fair to say Tooth & Nail is doing something wrong when they're just working with the format they've chosen to release in. Anyway... I've listened to side one so far... I quite like this! "Trucker's Son" is a highlight on first listen.

i hate digipaks. they mess up my cd shelf, and then i have a section that is not quite "full" or if i have 2 digipaks in one section, then its so full i can barely slide a cd out. its a nuisance.

Haha, that's all true, but my only real beef is the artwork can scuff up so easily. I need to buy a set of those resealable plastic CD sleeves...
(What do you do for those simple cardboard sleeve CDs? I have a collector's-type lunchbox in which I keep all of those things and other CD oddities.)
Well, my verdict is I really love this new album. I haven't gotten to the bonus disc yet.

True I was commenting on the artwork for the most part with BTV vs. T&N. However, given that T&N is the label BTV seems to go out of its way, without having to, to put forth a great quality product that isn't the bare minimum with regards to the fancy cover, additional 7" and the marbled vinyl. In my opinion T&N just does the bare minimum. Heck, they didn't even print enough CDs to satisfy demand on the first day!

I tried to pre-order it on Amazon and Barnes and Noble and it was out of stock. Given that T&N said you could order it from there and they didn't have enough to keep up with demand I'd say that's a problem.

Usually Tooth & Nail uploads very high resolution versions of the cover art and various other photos to their "Press" section, but I haven't seen the new cover there. I'm hunting around Invisible Creature's site and I've found a 500 by 500 px image, but I'd really like to get an even higher resolution. Anyone else have any luck with this?

Let me preface: please don't label me a hater because I'm really not. Huge Starflyer fan. Have been for years.
But, is anyone just not really feeling this album? I like every incarnation of Starflyer from the noisy rocky stuff to the more polished pop stuff, but this is the first album of Jason's that I've just literally felt almost no affection for. Lyrically, it's just an extension of the things he's been writing about for the past few albums. I understand he's writing from the heart, but "I Had Song For The Ages" = "Major Awards" = "I Love You Like The Little Bird".
"Shane" is probably the most interesting track to me, because it sounds like he's branching out and trying new things, but the majority of the record is just so underwhelming. I'm always so psyched when a new SF59 record is coming out, but after popping it in and hearing "Fun Is Fun", I just felt so deflated. That song is like the musical equivalent of a shrug. I feel the same way about "Lose My Mind". "Time Machine" is kind of nice, but again, it just feels sort of half-realized.
Both Jason and Ronnie are so prolific and I love that I get to hear new Starflyer often, but I don't think it would be a terrible idea for both of them to slow down a bit and really work on making another great album as opposed to another album. I get so tired of hearing the word "durable" used to describe Starflyer's music, as in "it's another durable album by a gifted songwriter". I'm ready for "that album was awesome" again.
Again, this is coming from a place of absolute love. I'm a die-hard fan and Jason Martin is basically my hero.

I felt similarly. Then I listened to the album again the next day, and it grew on me. I listened to the whole album five times that day. I rarely feel like listening to a single album more than once a day. I understand he's writing from the heart, but "I Had Song For The Ages" = "Major Awards" = "I Love You Like The Little Bird". Major Awards = "Why haven't I gotten any recognition for my work?" I Love You Like the Little Bird = "I'm getting sick of this, but I'm not giving up because my family needs me." I Had a Song for the Ages = "Does anything I do matter? I thought I really had something to say, but now I'm not sure." Also...the line "...like Serling says" is, uh... ...one of many references in that song to a classic episode of The Twilight Zone.
