Maybe I asked this before, but was anyone here angry that Ghosts came out on CD?

There were people on the Velvet Blue Board who were FURIOUS over Ghosts of the Past. They felt that they'd been misled into thinking that the Ghosts of the Future songs would never be rereleased, and a few were angry that this wasn't another greatest-hits album a la Easy Come Easy Go.

Well, to those who still beleive in vinyl exclusive stuff..

Digital has made everyone sell out. It's so easy, it gets the product out to more people, and it gets revenue.
There's no way you yourself would release something on vinyl only..

I don't think the digital releases make as much money as one might think. Pink Floyd sued EMI because the band members weren't being compensated for individual track downloads. The digital release could help the record label with not having to put out as much money in manufacturing and distribution. But I doubt those savings are passed on to the band. Jason probably makes more money on the vinyls that he does off the actual records.

The Beatles catalog is still not available digitally. If the people who owned the Beatles catalog were smart they would put all that out on vinyl again. They realize once they put those albums online for download there will be no turning back.

The Ghosts of the Past CD compilation featured the Ghosts vinyl set, but also The Last Laurel EP and the I Win EP. Those EPs are somewhat rarer now and paying for the 2 disc set is probably about the same as buying both EPs.

I personally enjoyed the CD. I own the EPs but it is nice to have them altogether. The new versions of Little Bird are great.

Besides, why not? I want Jason and T&N to make revenue. Supporting him only helps make more produced material.

what made me mad was that it was exclusive to vinyl.

I was thrilled that it was released on cd, especially because the vinyl was too expensive for me.

The vinyl people thought it would be exclusive forever. The exclusivity was the selling point. I remember considering buying the box set, but it was around $50 for the set. I might be a little angry if I shelled out the $50 and then found out I could have waited and gotten it on CD for $15 or whatever it is now.

doesn't matter to me. the boxed set is an amazing physical product and great for when i want to sit and really enjoy the tunes, and enjoy flipping the 7"s and looking at the art. when i want to listen to the track on shuffle or in my car, vinyl doesn't work and it sounds great. if i had the cd first, i'd still buy the boxset.

i don't feel like i got ripped off. if people are pissed cause they had the vinyl and some guy down the block got the same songs way cheaper on cd, they got something completely different. they didn't get limited edition colored vinyl with several hand-screened sleeves and a hand screened wooden box.

I was indifferent. I bought the box set just for bragging rights, I REALLY liked the songs and imported them onto my computer, i really liked the punch of the records on my hi-fi, but the mp3s just didnt have the same dynamics. putting PAST on my ipod brought it closer to the quality of teh records on my hi-fi than listening to the actual rips of teh records i made.

(I can't believe I didn't notice this comment earlier.)

When Richard Swift first went solo, he exclusively released his stuff on vinyl. No CD's, no online downloads. It's like he didn't want an audience or something. He only started releasing in digital formats after he signed to Secretly Canadian Records, and I presume SCR twisted his arm into doing so.

Vinyl only? It's more likely than you think.

Actually, The Novelist was first put out on CD. There is also that early, super indie release of Walking Without Effort. I'm not sure what format that was. I saw a copy once. As far as I remember, it was CD.

Each time I see this thread I think it's about a band called 'Angry Ghosts.'

So I think we can all agree that all physical Starflyer 59 releases at this point, especially vinyl, will sell regardless.

I just hope that T&N and Jason don't realize it. Cheesy
